My city is dying, and our greatest voice for press freedom now burning at the stake.
I am already grieving, but how long will it take for us to die completely? A slow death of suffocation, as we drown in crimson blood laced with yellow stars?
Apple Daily is not just the “biggest” pro-democracy paper; at the moment, it is the ONLY pro-democracy paper.
It was the only paper that refused to print the government’s propaganda ad on its front page, and from now on we can only choose between mouthpieceA and mouthpieceB.
Apple Daily is far from a perfect newspaper, but seeing the only major media standing up for freedom get forcefully brought down like this brings me nothing but devestation. What more are we going to lose? What do we even have left to lose? This sense of suffocation is horrible and terrifying.
It is heartbreaking to see Apple Daily shuts down. It should up to the readers to decide whether the newspaper is worthy or not. It should never be the government’s decision. Without Apple Daily, who is going to monitor and question the authority?
Hong Kong’s largest pro-democracy newspaper Apple Daily is forced to close by the Hong Kong authorities. We should never have only one voice in the society.

The last printed copy of Apple Daily will be published on 24 June 2021, marks the end of the 26 year of the newspaper. Apple Daily says they are printing 1,000,000 copies.
Hong Kong (CNN BusinessOne year was all it took for a Beijing-imposedNational Security Law to take downHong Kong’s largest and loudest pro-democracy newspaper.
Next Media announced Wednesdaythat Apple Daily, its flagship tabloid, would publish its final copy Thursday due to an untenable environment in which its journalists had been arrested and millions of dollars in assets had been frozen. Its digital platform will cease operations on the same day, the company said in a statement.
The news sent a deep chill through Hong Kong’s media industry and undermined government claims the new legislation would not diminish press freedom.
Apple Daily, the largest pro-democracy newspaper in Hong Kong will be shut down on 24 Jun 2021, after owner and executives including the editor arrested under the National Security Law. With its bank accounts frozen, the company has no choice but to shut down.
Beijing is using the National Security Law to suppress freedom of the press and the free expression of opinions. However, the seed of freedom is in our heart and will never die.
Disney is releasing the Mulan movie on its platform (and cinemas in some countries). The artress Liu Lifei posted on social media last year said she supports Hong Kong police, who have been accused of violence and sexual assault towards pro-democracy protesters. Hongkongers and people around the world called to boycott Mulan since then. (BBC news)
Mulan should not be supporting police brutality. Mulan should be a heroine who fight for her family and country, like Agnes Chow, 23, a Hong Kong activist who has been arrested earlier under a controversial new security law imposed by Beijing. She was charged of “colluding with foreign forces” - if convicted, she could face up to life in jail. Under the new law, inciting hatred of China’s central government and Hong Kong’s regional government is illegal. (BBC News)
It means you cannot criticize the government or speak I’ll of it. What kind of regime would be scared of its people? A dictatorship.
This summer, Chinese Communist Party announced Mandarin Chinese will replace Mongolian as the medium of instruction in schools for minority groups across the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, home to 4.2 million ethnic Mongolians. “When the Mongolian language dies, our Mongolian ethnicity will also disappear,” said a Mongolian father of an 8 yo son. (CNN News)
It is ironic that the real Mulan in the history was not a Han ethnicity (which make up >90% of nowadays China population). She was Xianbei ethnicity, an ancient nomadic people that once resided in the eastern Eurasian steppes in what is today Mongolia, Inner Mongolia, and Northeastern China.
If the real Mulan knew what the CCP is doing to the Mongolia culture, she would fight them. She would never support the dictatorial CCP government.
If you support freedom and human rights, boycott Mulan. Tell Disney that kowtowing to Beijing is not looking good on them.
If you really like the Mulan story, maybe you can rewatch the Mulan animated film. At least they got a dragon in it.
Hong Kong government said that the solgan “Liberate Hong Kong, revolution of our time” is in violation of the new national security law as it is pro-independence, secessionist and subversive.
Protesters just made a new flag for that. It is the beauty of traditional Chinese characters. Ideas are bulletproof.
光復香港
時代革命
I do not know the source of the new flag. If anyone knows it please let me know.
